Senator Mari Alvarado-Hill, representing the 4th district of California, recently attracted attention not only for her legislative work, but also because of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her by a former employee.

Former chief of staff Chad Condit claims that Alvarado-Hill treated him as a sex slave, at one point demanding oral sex from the married 57-year-old man. He also claims that he herniated three discs in his back while performing a task in a cramped car seat, which led to her pushing him around a casino in a wheelchair. He also alleges that she continued to make sexual remarks as they moved around the casino.

«I want you to kiss this and prove your loyalty», - Alvarado-Hill allegedly told Condit during a work trip, according to a civil lawsuit filed in Sacramento.

While the lawsuits have been called «baseless» by Alvarado-Hill's lawyer, here’s what we know about the California legislator.

Alvarado-Hill has been an active figure in California politics, originally a Democrat, but in August 2024 she switched her party affiliation to Republican, expressing dissatisfaction with the direction of the Democratic Party in California.

«From day one in my position, I have put the interests of my constituents above all else. I was elected to serve the public, not a political ideology», - Alvarado-Hill said in a statement. «The status quo under the supermajority of Democratic rule in the legislature simply does not work for this state. After deep reflection, I announce that I will join the Senate Republican Caucus and the California Republican Party in their fight to fix California».

Her switch was also announced in an interview on Fox News, where she said, «I don’t recognize today’s Democratic Party in California».

Alvarado-Hill, representing a conservative district, won her 2022 election against a progressive Democrat by over 5 percentage points after they beat out six Republican candidates in the primary. Her district has become more Republican since 2022 — in 2024, Republicans made up nearly 39% of registered voters, while Democrats were at 34%.

California Senate Majority Leader Mike McGuire, a Democrat, said Alvarado-Hill's decision «disappoints the voters» who elected her in 2022.

«They entrusted her to represent their interests, and she betrayed that trust», - he said in a statement.

He added, «One plus is that MAGA Republicans get a colleague who supports choice, LGBTQ+ rights, and is against Trump. We wish her luck».

In September 2024, Condit filed a lawsuit against Alvarado-Hill, accusing her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. The lawsuit, filed in Sacramento, alleges that Alvarado-Hill forced Condit to perform sexual acts and retaliated against him when he resisted, ultimately leading to his dismissal — via text message — in December 2023.

Condit’s lawsuit contains a number of allegations, including claims that Alvarado-Hill used her power to put him in compromising situations, contributed to a hostile environment, and violated state employment laws. The accusations include inappropriate comments, unwanted advances, and personal tasks unrelated to work, such as caring for her children and pet. Condit also mentioned physical injuries to his herniated discs allegedly caused by oral sex in a car.

Alvarado-Hill did not directly comment on the lawsuit, but her lawyer Ognyan Gavrilov dismissed the allegations as «unfounded», - stating, «This is an absurd lawsuit, and we will fight and win». The California Senate, also named in the lawsuit, is reviewing the allegations but has not provided any public comments.

Despite the scandal, Alvarado-Hill continues her legislative work.
