For many years, Donald Trump attracted attention with his desire to receive the highly coveted Nobel Peace Prize, but he was never awarded it. The laureate of the 2025 prize was Venezuelan politician and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. In light of her victory, some are questioning whether Trump was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
Find out what we know about the selection process for the prize below.
Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her «tireless work in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle for a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy», - the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in October 2025.
«Maria Corina Machado meets all three criteria set out in Alfred Nobel’s will for selecting a Peace Prize laureate», - the committee continued. «She united the opposition in her country. She never wavered in resisting the militarization of Venezuelan society. She was steadfast in her support for a peaceful transition to democracy».
In response to Machado’s victory, White House public relations director Stephen Chung accused the Norwegian Nobel Committee of putting «politics above peace» in their decision.
«President Trump will continue to make peace deals, end wars, and save lives», - Chung tweeted. «He has a humanitarian heart, and there will never be anyone who can move mountains with the force of his will. The Nobel Committee has shown that they put politics above peace».
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for the voting process. A candidate’s nomination is only valid if it is submitted by someone who meets certain criteria. The necessary criteria include members of national assemblies and governments, university professors, other prize laureates, and current and former committee members, according to the committee’s website.
There is no way to know if Trump was nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize because the Norwegian Nobel Committee «does not confirm the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves». The list of nominees is published 50 years after the prize is awarded.
The committee reported that there were 338 nominees for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations.
Trump’s nomination has been a topic of discussion for many years. His opponent in the 2016 presidential elections, Hillary Clinton, stated that she would have nominated the Republican for the Nobel Peace Prize if he could have ended the war in Ukraine without conceding any territory to Russia.
«If we were able to do that, if President Trump were the architect of that, I would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize because my goal here is not to capitulate to Putin, aided and abetted by the United States», - Clinton said on the «Raging Moderates» podcast in August 2025. «I dream that for some reason, including the elusive Nobel Peace Prize, President Trump could really stand up against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin on behalf not only of Ukraine and its democracy and its very brave people, but frankly, on behalf of our own security and interests»
