The Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 was awarded to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado, not to Donald Trump, who openly expressed a desire to win this title. On October 10, 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the recognition of Machado for her «tireless work in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her fight for a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy».
«Maria Corina Machado meets all three criteria outlined in Alfred Nobel’s will for selecting the Peace Prize laureate», - the committee stated in its announcement. «She united the opposition in her country. She never wavered in resisting the militarization of Venezuelan society. She was steadfast in her support for a peaceful transition to democracy».
In response to Machado’s recognition, White House Director of Public Relations Steven Chung accused the committee of putting «politics above peace» with their award for the year 2025.
«President Trump will continue to negotiate peace agreements, end wars, and save lives», - Chung wrote on Twitter. «He has a humanitarian heart, and there will never be anyone who can move mountains just with the strength of their will. The Nobel Committee has shown that they prioritize politics over peace».
