The film «The Miller’s Daughter» by Lionsgate caused a big scandal when it was released earlier this year due to sexual scenes between an 18-year-old female character and an older teacher. Now actor Martin Freeman is reacting to the criticism the film received for its eroticism and age difference with his co-star Jenna Ortega.
During an interview with The Times, Martin, 52, described his and Jenna’s film as «adult and nuanced».
«It's not saying, 'Isn't this great?'» he said, referring to the plot. Calling the criticism «sad», the English actor continued: «Are we going to criticize Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?» Martin was referring to the 1993 film «Schindler's List».
According to the synopsis of «The Miller’s Daughter», 18-year-old student Jenna, playing a character named Cairo, «embarks on a creative journey when her teacher assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As boundaries blur and their lives intertwine, the professor and his protege must confront their darkest sides, maintaining their individual sense of purpose and what they hold most dear».
Although «Wednesday» series star Jenna, 21, did not openly discuss her erotic scenes with Martin, the film’s intimacy coordinator, Christina Aragona, spoke with Daily Mail shortly after the film’s premiere.
«Throughout this process, there were a lot of people working with Jenna to make sure it was in line with her comfort, and she was very insistent and confident in what she wanted to do», - explained Christina to the publication in February, adding that cast members «also have the opportunity to change their minds on the day if they don’t want to do what we discussed».
The coordinator acknowledged that «part of her job is supporting Jenna’s decisions» and also noted that with an age difference, as in the film «The Miller’s Daughter», Christina’s goal was to ensure the comfort of both actors.
«I adapt to the comfort level of my actors, especially on set, where there is a significant age difference between the actors», - noted Christina. «I am hyper-aware of my talents and make sure we constantly check in and never cross their boundaries. And again, making sure — especially with someone significantly younger — that they have given continuous consent»
