The year 2025 began under threat for many people. Throughout January 2025, the United States faced natural disasters from coast to coast, the most devastating of which were the wildfires in southern California. Recently, Massachusetts was shaken by an earthquake on Monday, January 27, and the residents of Boston felt the tremor. The rare event caused mass confusion, as many turned to social media to express their shock and bewilderment.

The epicenter of the earthquake on January 27 was not in Boston. However, Bostonians felt the jolt around 10:30 am local time. According to multiple sources, the epicenter of the earthquake was more than 40 miles off the coast of Portland, Maine, in New England. The tremor was measured at 3.8 on the Richter scale.

The York County Emergency Management confirmed the incident in a tweet, writing: «We can confirm that a small earthquake occurred at 10:22 am. The shake was felt throughout the county. There is no threat to the public. To assist our dispatch centers, please DO NOT call 911 unless it is an emergency».

Believe it or not, there have been several earthquakes in the past in Boston, but most of them did not cause serious damage to the region. According to Earthquake Track, at the end of 2024, there was a 1.7 magnitude earthquake near Townsend, Massachusetts. Over the past five years, there have been several earthquakes in Massachusetts ranging from 0.7 to 3.6 on the Richter scale.

Since the latest earthquake was 3.8 on the Richter scale, it is the largest tremor in Massachusetts in the past five years. The US Geological Survey initially measured the earthquake as 4.1 before downgrading it to 3.8.

The US Geological Survey reported that people from Boston to Portland, Maine, felt the tremor from the earthquake today. Residents of New Hampshire also felt the jolt, including the regions of Seacoast, Dover, Manchester, Concord, Keene, and Claremont
