On Tuesday, September 10, significant traffic jams occurred in New Jersey and New York due to a motorcycle accident in the Lincoln Tunnel early in the morning. As a result, traffic was blocked, leading to several additional accidents. Compounding the situation, there was a system failure at Penn Station in New York due to a power outage, causing additional problems for passengers.
Chaos began around 4:00 am inside the tunnel, where a motorcycle collided in the westbound tunnel. The tunnel was eventually cleared, allowing traffic to pass. However, the center tunnel was closed, and drivers were redirected to the south tunnel, resulting in serious traffic jams.
The situation worsened when a car overturned, and a bus with a flat tire got stuck inside the tunnel. According to ABC 7 News New York, one driver reported being stuck in traffic for four hours, even though his usual commute takes only 25 minutes.
By 10:24 am on Tuesday, the Lincoln Tunnel account reported, «The south tube of the Lincoln Tunnel in New York is experiencing a 10−15 minute delay. The earlier incident in the Center tube has been cleared. All lanes are open», - indicating that traffic was beginning to improve.
In addition to the problems around the Lincoln Tunnel, passenger routes were further disrupted due to the suspension of transit services at Penn Station due to the power outage. According to New Jersey Transit, «Rail service into Penn Station New York is suspended due to issues with the catenary wires in the Hudson River tunnels. Midtown Direct service is being diverted to Hoboken. NJ TRANSIT buses and private carriers are accepting rail tickets and passes».
The latest update from Northeast Corridor New Jersey Transit indicates that service has been restored but is still experiencing delays. They posted on X, «1 of 2: Rail service to and from Penn Station New York is subject to delays of up to 30 minutes due to an earlier power outage from Amtrak in the Hudson River tunnels»
