On October 20, 2025, the internet experienced a massive outage when Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported a widespread failure, causing thousands of websites and popular applications to stop working. More than 4 million users reported issues through the Downdetector outage tracker, and Raef Pilling, director of threats at cybersecurity firm Sophos, warned that «AWS has a broad and complex footprint, so any issue can cause serious trouble».
These outages affected everything from platforms like Fortnite and Snapchat to banking websites and streaming services. Find out what is still impacted, what caused the outage, and how services are beginning to recover below.
The outage that affected Amazon Web Services (AWS) and began early in the morning on October 20, 2025, has mostly been resolved. The company initially reported issues at 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time, and by 6:35 a.m. Eastern Time stated that «most AWS Service operations are currently running normally».
AWS confirmed that they are seeing «significant signs of recovery», - adding that «most requests should now be successful» as engineers worked to catch up and restore full normalcy.
The outage was traced to a significant «increase in errors and delays» in the US-EAST-1 region, focused on a DNS resolution issue related to the AWS DynamoDB service endpoint, the primary database supporting countless applications and websites worldwide.
According to AWS, the root cause was related to infrastructure, not a cyberattack. The company stated that engineers isolated the issue within their internal network layer and began restoring the service over the course of several hours.
A wide range of popular applications and services that rely on AWS were affected, causing widespread disruptions in the gaming, financial, communication, and technology sectors.
Gaming and streaming services such as Fortnite, Roblox, Pokémon Go, HBO Max, and even Starbucks mobile payments experienced significant downtime. Social and messaging platforms like Snapchat, Signal, Reddit, and Wordle also remained unavailable for several hours, leaving millions of users unable to connect. The financial sector was also not spared — Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, and Chime faced temporary access issues, disrupting transactions and payments.
Technological tools and smart home systems, including Amazon Alexa, Ring, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Amazon Chime, also suffered, highlighting how much the global digital ecosystem relies on AWS cloud infrastructure. Other applications such as Duolingo, Canva, Life360, and Hulu also experienced interruptions before gradually returning to normal operation
