Mass shooting in Birmingham: four dead and dozens injured

At least four people were killed and «dozens» were injured in a mass shooting in one of Birmingham, Alabama’s most popular entertainment districts on Saturday evening, the Birmingham Police Department reported.
«Several gunmen opened fire on a group of people» around 11:00 p.m. in the Five Points South area, said police officer Truman Fitzgerald.
When police arrived at the scene, they found two men and a woman unconscious with gunshot wounds near the University of Alabama in Birmingham; all three were later pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth victim died at a local hospital, Fitzgerald added.
Detectives are investigating whether the shooters approached the victims on foot or drove by. The suspects have not been arrested.
It remains unclear how many people opened fire or what prompted the violence. Fitzgerald mentioned that the police are considering the possibility of «multiple shooters». Additional victims of gunshot wounds were found in the area, and other injured individuals were taken to local hospitals. According to spokesperson Hannah Echols, the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham is currently treating 11 injured individuals, although their conditions have not been disclosed.
«We have dozens of gunshot wound victims from this area», - Fitzgerald said. «I've been told that at least four of these victims are in life-threatening condition; the others have various injuries».
Fitzgerald noted that the increase in mass shootings «has more to do with culture than crime», - emphasizing, «we see too many disputes being settled with bullets».
Several law enforcement agencies are assisting in the investigation. The Birmingham Police Department has asked businesses in the area to provide any available surveillance footage and urged the public to provide any relevant information.
«Rest assured, we will do everything possible to identify, locate, and apprehend those responsible for attacking our people», - he said.
The Five Points South area is known for its vibrant nightlife, including restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, and concert venues near the University of Alabama in Birmingham campus and just a few minutes' drive from downtown.
