Halloween was supposed to be a fun evening for the residents of Orlando, but it ended in tragedy. An unknown individual opened fire and wounded several people in downtown Orlando in the early hours of November 1, 2024. The police have now arrested the suspect.

This is not the first time the city, which is home to some of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, has witnessed a mass shooting. In June 2016, 49 people were killed at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. After a three-hour standoff, the police shot the gunman.

Around 1:00 am on November 1, the police responded to a shooting near East Central Boulevard and North Orange Avenue in Orlando, according to WFLA. The Orlando Police stated that around 100 officers were patrolling the area that evening due to the large crowds celebrating Halloween.

During a subsequent press conference on November 1, Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke out against the violence. He noted: «We want downtown to be fun and alive, but recently we have seen brazen criminals willing to come downtown and shoot and kill innocent victims right in front of our officers. And unfortunately, changes in the state’s concealed carry laws have made it even easier for people to carry weapons and bring them downtown».

«Honestly, I am disappointed that I have to stand before you and share news again that we have senselessly lost another life to gun violence», - Dyer added.

In 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation allowing residents to carry concealed loaded weapons without a permit.

Two out of the nine people died during the Halloween mass shooting in Orlando, reports WFLA. Six of the victims were hospitalized. The ages of the victims range from 19 to 39 years old.

17-year-old Jaylen Duane Edgar was arrested, the police reported. Edgar has a prior criminal record. In 2023, Edgar was arrested for grand theft auto, NBC News reports. He faces charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm
