Massive outage of ChatGPT: the reason behind the platform failure at OpenAI

If you worked with ChatGPT today, you may have noticed that the OpenAI platform crashed. In what seemed like a widespread outage, users of the artificial intelligence tool complained that they were unable to send questions and load their ChatGPT. Many reported around 1:30 pm Eastern Time that after they submitted a request to the platform, ChatGPT did not load a response. So what was the cause of the crash?
At 11:00 Pacific Time/2:00 pm Eastern Time on December 26, OpenAI acknowledged a widespread issue on their status website. The announcement stated: «We are currently experiencing high error rates on ChatGPT, API, and Sora. We are currently investigating and will post an update as soon as we can».
The OpenAI problem is not the only technological failure we have seen this year. In early December 2024, Meta platforms, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp all crashed, causing panic on the internet. The outage prevented users from posting photos or statuses. Meta itself had to confirm the issue via X (formerly known as Twitter).

At the time of publication, ChatGPT was still not working for many users. According to Downdetector, over 15,000 people reported the outage around 2:00 pm Eastern Time. By 3:00 pm, around 3,900 people had reported issues.
At 11:18 Pacific Time/2:18 pm Eastern Time, OpenAI confirmed the cause of their outage. «This issue is caused by a service provider, and we are currently monitoring it», - the platform noted.
The service provider is usually an internet service provider (ISP) that connects the ISP to the platform. In other words, the platform’s internet provider cannot effectively connect its data. This, in turn, hinders the end user from accessing their saved data.
