Internet and social media users woke up from a massive outage on October 20, 2025, which was mainly related to an AWS failure. One of the services affected was the popular Ring Doorbell camera and its application, which provides customers with a live stream from their doorstep.

Below is an update on the status of the Ring Doorbell service and find out what happened to it today.

Ring seems to no longer be completely unavailable for most users, but some still report issues on Downdetector.

One user commented on Downdetector around 10:00 am Eastern Time, saying: «One of my cameras is showing as offline, but my door camera is working. I unplugged the offline camera and plugged it back in and realized that the 'offline' camera was capturing static images before I unplugged it. Since I plugged it back in, it’s not like that anymore». Shortly before this, they updated their comment to note: «Unplugged and plugged back in and the images updated for the time when nothing was displayed. Security camera still offline. Door camera still working».

At 11:37 am Eastern Time, Ring acknowledged the issue in a post X, which read: «We are aware of a service disruption affecting multiple Ring systems. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issue».

The Ring service went down on October 20 due to a widespread AWS outage, which was acknowledged by Amazon. The company pointed to a «DNS issue».

«The primary DNS issue has been fully resolved, and most AWS Service operations are now successfully executing», - the AWS statement said, according to CNN. «Some requests may be delayed as we work on a full resolution. In addition, some services continue to operate with event delays, such as Cloudtrail and Lambda».

Today, October 20, many online services went down, including Snapchat, which is not owned by Amazon. Canva, Hulu, Disney, and AT&T also experienced issues, as did airlines. Delta and United Airlines were affected by the global online outage.

The international online service outage even affected some banks in the UK, in addition to American airlines Delta and United.

According to computer networking expert Graham Bragg from the University of Southampton, the issue was caused by a DNS failure on Amazon’s part.

«This morning, a problem affecting Amazon US East caused significant disruptions due to a DNS issue — the 'phone book' of the internet that helps computers find each other», - Bragg said, according to The Independent. «This affected many services hosted in different regions because Amazon hosts much of its management infrastructure, on which other services depend, in this region. This is a significant outage due to how many companies rely on Amazon and the global scale of its influence».

While the «primary issue is now resolved», - Bragg pointed out that «it will take some time to propagate across the internet».

«Amazon servers also have a delay in requests, so it is likely that we will see some disruptions in operation for the remainder of the day», - Bragg added
