Massive Verizon network outage: what happened and how to fix it?

Verizon customers received an unpleasant wake-up call on Monday morning, September 30th. According to DownDetector, over 100,000 Verizon users reported an outage in their area by 11:30 am. Social media users expressed their disappointment at seeing the dreaded «SOS» signal in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and other locations. So, what caused the massive Verizon outage?
Verizon customers across the country reported network issues on DownDetector after 12 pm. One person from California wrote: «Issues in San Jose. Can’t even log into my Verizon Wireless account. 'Cannot authenticate your account…' By the way, restarting your phone or resetting the SIM card will not fix Verizon’s backend issue».
Another user in New York wrote on the site: «SOS in Manhattan, New York!!! Fix this! We have things to do, it’s been hours!!»
A separate Verizon user in Central Ohio wrote that «all personal phones are only in SOS mode at home and when talking to colleagues. All work phones from Verizon are working as usual without any problems».
It is still unclear what caused the sudden Verizon outage. According to a company X account, a company representative made a statement, noting that they are «aware» of the service issue.
«We are aware of an issue affecting service for some customers», - a tweet from Verizon read. «Our engineers are on it and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue».
When a Verizon customer sees the «SOS» signal on their phone, it usually means there is an issue connecting to the wireless network. However, each device should still be able to make calls to 911 if the user connects to another carrier.
At the time of publication, thousands of Verizon customers are still reporting outages. From New York to California, almost every state in the United States is experiencing a widespread Verizon wireless network outage.
