Mother arrested for failing to assist sick son
A 24-year-old Juanisha Johnson was arrested in Florida after her two-month-old son sustained serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and rib fractures. She was taken into custody on October 7 and charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm, child neglect without great bodily harm, attempted tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest without violence.

According to the arrest report, Johnson is also accused of neglecting her two-year-old daughter, who suffered injuries including a hematoma and large abrasions on her forehead and temple. Authorities became aware of the injuries when Johnson brought her son to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville on October 4. Doctors determined that the boy had a traumatic brain injury and a brain bleed, and by October 5, his condition was critical.

A friend of Johnson told police that he noticed the child had a swollen eye and was bleeding profusely from the mouth. He also noted that the child was not eating, not sleeping, and was constantly crying. Despite this, Johnson, according to the friend, showed no concern and refused to contact law enforcement or the Department of Children and Families.

Johnson admitted that she was aware of her son’s condition but believed the injury could have been caused by him scratching his mouth. She took the child to the hospital only several hours after his condition worsened. During the preliminary investigation, police concluded that the child’s injuries were consistent with significant trauma or abuse. Johnson is being held on a $ 145,000 bond. It is currently unclear whether she has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
