Mother arrested for attempting to give 1-month-old son to stranger
A young mother, Karla Ibarra, was arrested in Texas after reportedly attempting to give her one-month-old son to a stranger at a bus stop. Ibarra, 18, approached a woman named Jennifer Benavides and asked to use her phone, after which she handed over her son along with his birth certificate and social security card.

According to Benavides, Ibarra offered to let her take the child, saying, «I'm going to give him away». Benavides convinced Ibarra to go to a friend’s house to feed and change the baby. However, Ibarra called a taxi and left the house, abandoning her son. She was later apprehended by police.

Ibarra was charged with abandonment and endangerment of a child with intent to return. The court set her bail at $ 7,000. After her arrest, child protective services confirmed that the child was placed with other relatives. Police have not yet disclosed whether Ibarra had any motivation for attempting to leave her son.

Under the «Baby Moses» law, parents in Texas can anonymously surrender a newborn, who is no more than 60 days old, at designated locations such as fire stations or hospitals without facing criminal charges. An eyewitness to the incident, Arthur Villarreal, reported seeing Ibarra being arrested and noted that she appeared calm during her interaction with the police. It is currently unclear whether Ibarra has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
