Earlier today, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain shared a snippet from their new film on Instagram with the caption: «Mother always knows best? Come see how we, friends, solve this question and confront each other in #MothersInstinct. Coming to selected theaters in the US on July 26th! 👯♀️»
«In me something is broken, and I need you», - Hathaway asks Chastain in one of the trailer moments, setting up a turning point for the characters they play.
With the look and atmosphere of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller, the 47-year-old actress of «The Good Nurse» Alice battles the 41-year-old actress of «Les Misérables» Selina in a game of cat and mouse, where their sisterly bond unravels, and the dark side of their maternal instincts comes to light.
The film is adapted from Barbara Abel’s novel «Mothers' Instinct» or, more precisely, «Derrière la Haine». Like in the novel, the film «Mothers' Instinct» is a dark, twisty domestic thriller where the bond between two women — best friends, neighbors, and mothers — turns into dangerous and deadly ways as a result of a tragic incident involving one of their sons accidentally falling out of a second-story window. The film turns two 1960s housewives with their picturesque families and homes into grieving, guilty, and paranoid women.
This film marks the directorial debut of French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme after many years of working as a cinematographer. Among his previous works are films like «Lawless», «The Most Dangerous Man», «The Theory of Everything», «At Eternity’s Gate», «Minamata», and «Lady Chatterley’s Lover».
Delhomme was a late replacement for director Olivier Masset-Depasse, who undoubtedly had a good grasp of the material. Masset-Depasse won a record nine Magritte Awards from the Belgian Academy, including Best Film and Best Director for the original film «Duel», which was closely adapted into «Mothers' Instinct».
The film has already been released in Europe in March of this year. For the US, «Mothers' Instinct» will be released in selected theaters on July 26th and on digital platforms on August 13th."
