«Mamala» is set to return to work. Maya Rudolph will once again play her role as Kamala Harris from Saturday Night Live during the vice president’s race for the White House. Several sources reported on Wednesday, July 31, that the 52-year-old actress will return for the upcoming season of SNL as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary on the airwaves.
Maya first appeared as Kamala, 59, on the show in 2019. She portrayed the former prosecutor during a sketch that later earned her an Emmy award the following year. The star of «Bridesmaids» later received another Emmy award for hosting the show in 2021.
One of Maya’s most popular Kamala sketches aired during the 2020 presidential elections, when President Joe Biden was battling against Donald Trump. In the sketch, Maya came out to stop the argument between Alec Baldwin’s version of Donald, 78, and Jim Carrey’s Joe, 81. She ended the sketch by telling Jim, «Let Mamala work» and asking, «Where's my martini?»
Kamala had previously reacted to Maya’s performance, speaking with Seth Meyers in 2019 and noting that she «grew up watching» the comedy series.
«The thought that someone is in some way portraying me on Saturday Night Live, it’s just — I was a little bit stunned», - the politician admitted at the time. «I will tell you, I fully intend to make sure she (Maya) has a full eight years on SNL».
The news of Maya’s return comes during Kamala’s presidential campaign against Donald. Earlier this month, President Biden announced that he was dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president.
