After the White House announced a temporary freeze on federal funds and loans, Medicaid users suddenly couldn’t access their online portal on Tuesday, January 28th. As part of the Trump administration, the president intends to end or review some government financial programs. Last week, 78-year-old Trump signed an order to gradually end diversity, equality, and inclusion programs in the government (known as DEI programs), as well as to transfer DEI employees to paid leave. With a temporary pause on certain federal grants, does this mean Medicaid is also frozen?

Find out everything we know about the Medicaid situation below.

Medicaid is a federal and state program that helps low-income Americans get health insurance.

We have confirmed that payments have not been affected — they are still being processed and sent.

We expect the portal to be back up and running soon.

No, according to White House press secretary Caroline Levitt, Medicaid is not currently frozen. 27-year-old Levitt wrote on Twitter: «The White House is aware of the Medicaid web portal outage. We have confirmed that payments have not been affected — they are still being processed and sent. We expect the portal to be back up and running soon».

However, many journalists and social media users complained online that the Medicaid portal was still not working on January 28.

Acting White House Office of Management and Budget Director Matthew Wait wrote in a memorandum obtained by CNN that «using federal resources to promote Marxist equality, transgenderism, and social engineering of the New Green Deal is a waste of taxpayer money that does not improve the daily lives of those we serve».

Wait explained that «this temporary pause [of federal grants] will give the administration time to review agency programs and determine the best use of funding for these programs in accordance with the law and the president’s priorities».

The memorandum also states that «each agency must complete a comprehensive analysis of all of its federal financial assistance programs to identify programs, projects, and activities that may be affected by any of the president’s directives».

At the time of publication, it is unclear if food stamps, also known as SNAP benefits, have been frozen. These benefits provide additional funds to help low-income families purchase food.

It is unclear if FAFSA was suspended during the temporary halt of federal grants and loans. Financial aid is a form of federal assistance used by many undergraduate students across the country who cannot afford tuition and other fees
