Meghan Markle embraces the Colombian spirit, speaking in Spanish during a conference that supports Afro-Colombian women.
The 43-year-old duchess has been in the country for several days, where she has been seen dancing salsa, visiting the Tamborres school in Cartagena, and meeting with the Vice President of Colombia, Francia Marquez, and her partner. Immersing themselves in the local culture, they have enjoyed the famous cuisine, landscapes, and diversity of the country. Since their arrival, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful for the warm welcome.
During an event in Cali, Meghan took the microphone and demonstrated the Spanish language she learned in Argentina 20 years ago. She expressed: «I wanted to start in Spanish because we are in your country. My husband and I feel this embrace from Colombia; it’s incredible. So thank you, thank you very much, because the culture, history, everything has been like a dream on this trip… Here I feel this community and connection, which is the best feeling in the world right now, so thank you».
When the issue of race and representation arose, Meghan emphasized: «We all know how important representation is. We all know that if you see someone who looks like you, speaks like you, or comes from your community, you can believe that it is possible to achieve such a powerful position».
As a woman of mixed race, Meghan faced criticism during her time at the royal palace with her husband, Prince Harry, who accompanied her on this trip to Colombia. Issues of race arose during their stay at Buckingham Palace, especially when senior officials resisted giving their son, Archie, a title or security, noting that he was a «child of color».
Meghan remains committed to representation, ensuring that the Afro community — whether Colombian or from any other part of the world — knows how important it is to have role models who show them that it is possible
