Podcaster Megyn Kelly criticized Olivia Rodrigo for her comments regarding the group sexual assault case at Cornell University. After Rodrigo, 23, posted on Instagram on October 4 condemning the university in light of a former student’s allegations of sexual assault against seven fraternity brothers, Kelly, 55, did not hold back in her expressions during her podcast «Megyn Kelly Show» on October 5.
Kelly stated, «Olivia, in general, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Shut up and stick to singing». She added that she preferred Rodrigo when she was just singing her «weird little sad songs». The journalist also noted that it is better to remain silent than to open one’s mouth and confirm that you are an idiot, urging not to draw attention to «ignorant fools» who became famous thanks to auto-tune and suddenly decided they could speak about culture wars.
Rodrigo wrote on her Instagram, «Shame on Cornell and every institution that protects rapists and abusers instead of women. I stand with Jane Doe. Her courage resonates across the country, and the crimes against her will not go unpunished». The former student, known by the pseudonym Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit against Cornell on September 16.
On September 29, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, who reopened the investigation, told People that he believes «something sinister happened» at the fraternity house on the night of the alleged incident. Doe claims she was raped at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca, New York, on October 19, 2024, after being pressured to consume drugs and alcohol.
According to her lawsuit, two of the seven fraternity members were suspended from school, while others were reportedly required to write essays and undergo training.
