Former First Lady Melania Trump released a statement after her husband, former President Donald Trump, was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13. In the statement, Melania called for unity and kindness, condemning the shooter’s actions in a letter that was published on social media on Sunday. «I am thinking of you, my fellow citizens», - Melania began her statement.
Melania wrote that she knew their lives — hers, Donald’s, and their son Barron’s — were on the brink of devastating changes after the former president was grazed by a bullet. «I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect my husband», - she wrote. «To the families of innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I express my sincere condolences. Your need to summon inner strength for such a horrific reason saddens me».
Melania continued and speculated that the shooter saw her husband as a «ruthless political machine», - and called Donald «a generous and caring man, with whom I have been through the best and worst of times».
Throughout the statement, the former model shared a unifying message, urging Americans to come together. «We have always been a unique union. America, the fabric of our tender nation is torn, but our courage and common sense must rise and unite us as one», - she said. «We are all people, and fundamentally, instinctively, we want to help each other. American politics is just one means that can lift our communities. Love, compassion, kindness, and empathy are necessities».
Melania also pleaded with people to look beyond party lines and see each other more humanely, thanks to those who reached out for help. «And let us remember that when the time comes to look beyond left and right, beyond red and blue, we all come from families with a passion to fight for a better life together, as long as we are here on this earthly planet», - she wrote. «Winds of change have come. To those of you who cry out in support, I thank you. I praise those of you who have transcended political division — thank you for remembering that every politician is a man or woman with a loving family»
