Melissa Barrera refuses to return to the «Scream» franchise
Actress Melissa Barrera spoke about the possibility of returning to the «Scream» franchise after being fired for supporting the Palestinian people amid the war in Gaza. In an interview published on September 25, she stated that she would not return to the project while the rights to it belong to the current company.

Barrera, who played the role of Sam Carpenter in the 2022 «Scream» and «Scream VI» in 2023, was let go in November 2023. The reason was her social media posts in which she protested against the actions of Israel and the U.S. following the October 7, 2023, attacks carried out by Hamas. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 74,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli attacks, including over 20,000 children, according to information provided by an independent U.N. commission.

Spyglass Media Group, the company producing the «Scream» films, stated that it has a «zero tolerance» for anti-Semitism and hate speech. In an interview with the Associated Press, Barrera also commented on the support given by rapper Macklemore, who was fired from Ed Sheeran’s tour after expressing his stance on human rights.

Additionally, Matthew Lillard, Barrera’s former co-star and one of the original actors from «Scream», - expressed regret for not supporting her after her dismissal. He noted that the world did not respond to her situation as it should have and acknowledged his mistake in not returning to the project.
