New York City Mayor Eric Adams may be pardoned by Donald Trump. The president-elect recently confirmed that he will «definitely look into» the charges against Adams after his indictment earlier this year. As presidential pardons have recently been in the news, find out if Adams could be cleared of the charges.
In September 2024, Mayor Adams was charged with bribery. According to district attorney Damian Williams, «It is alleged that Mayor Adams abused his position as the highest elected official of this city and previously as the Brooklyn Borough President to take bribes and solicit illegal donations for his election campaign».
Williams added, «Allegedly, by accepting improper and illegal benefits from foreign nationals, including permission to open a skyscraper in Manhattan without fire inspection control, Adams put the interests of his benefactors, including a foreign official, above the interests of his constituents. This office and our partners in the FBI and DOI will continue to fight corruption anywhere in this city, especially when that corruption takes the form of illegal foreign influence on our democratic system».
Adams has vehemently denied the charges against him, calling them «completely false» in a public statement. He also promised to fight the charges in court.
Adams is a Democrat. He was registered with the party until 1995. According to multiple sources, from 1995 to 2002 he was registered with the Republican Party. However, since 2002 Adams has been a Democrat.

In December 2024, Trump was asked if he would consider pardoning Adams. In response, the Republican said he would consider it after learning the facts of the case against the Democrat.
«I think he’s been treated very unfairly», - Trump said of Adams. «It's very interesting when he essentially came out against what was happening with migrants. And, you know, he made some pretty strong statements like 'This is unstable.' I said, 'You know what? He’s going to be charged soon.' And I said that. It’s a prediction, a little bit jokingly, but I said it. I said, 'He's going to be charged.' And a few months later, he was charged. So, I will definitely look into it»
