Mariah Carey spoke out after the news of the death of her mother Patricia and sister Alison on the same day became known at the end of August.
«I'm getting back to work», - said the singer of «Fly Like a Bird» on Sunday, September 8, on Instagram. «The past few weeks have been tough».
«I really appreciate all your love and support, and I look forward to meeting my fans in China and Brazil», - added Carey, 55, in a video where she performs a slow, stripped-down version of her 2005 track «It's Like That». When the musician first shared the news of the death of her family members, she asked for privacy while dealing with the tragic events.
The Grammy winner is scheduled to perform in China on September 15 and 16, and then in Brazil on September 20 and 22. She uploaded another video where she performs her song «I Wish You Knew», - captioning the post: «I Wish You Knew, dedicated to my fans in China and Brazil! See you soon».
On August 26, Carey expressed her feelings about the deaths in a statement: «My heart is broken from losing my mother last weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day».
«I feel blessed to have spent the last week with my mom before she passed away», - she added. «I appreciate all your love, support, and respect for my privacy at this impossible time».
For many years, the singer of «Always Be My Baby» has been open about her strained relationships with her mother, who was an opera singer and vocal coach at Juilliard, and her sister Alison. In her 2020 memoir «The Meaning of Mariah Carey», - she wrote that her relationships with her mother «caused me so much pain and confusion».
«For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist advised me to literally rename and reframe my family», - she wrote. «My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my former brother, and Alison my former sister… I had to stop expecting them to miraculously become the mother, older brother, and older sister I had dreamed of».
David Baker, a patient advocate who knew Alison personally, told PEOPLE magazine that Alison — a mother of four — was «a very intelligent, very sensitive person», - but added: «We saw it coming, but it’s still a shock. She got sick pretty quickly, and within a month she was gone».
Carey’s brother, Morgan, also told the magazine in a statement after the death of their mother and sister: «I pray for them and hope they have finally found peace. There were five of us, and now there are two of us left»
