Reports indicate that Eberflus was fired by the Bears on November 29 — the day after his current team suffered a defeat against the Detroit Lions. According to many sources, he was fired just a few hours after a press conference where Eberflus stated that he was «confident» he would return to coach the team in the game on December 8 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Speculation in the sports world began swirling after the team’s loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
Former Bears head coach Dave Wannstedt commented on the team’s defeat, speaking to NBC Chicago, and emphasized that the players' reaction to the coach can determine their overall success.
«Coaches can lose games, but you can never lose the locker room. If you lost the locker room, you’re done, understand?» — Wannstedt said to the publication. «And I don’t like what I’m hearing from the players after the game. I don’t like the atmosphere. For me, if I’m George McCaskey, here’s what I’m looking at. We had some miscues and a thousand reasons why… Where’s my football team? Do they still believe? That’s the key, when you get into this situation».
Eberflus faced serious backlash from football fans for not calling a timeout in the final seconds of the game. Instead, he let the clock run. This led to the Lions' victory, even though the Bears had a chance to win.
Before becoming the head coach of the Bears, Eberflus served as the linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2009 to 2010. The following year, he worked in the coaching staff of the Dallas Cowboys until 2017. From 2018 to 2021, he was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts.
Eberflus was a football player during his time at the University of Toledo, eventually becoming the team captain. Later, Eberflus worked as an assistant coach for students, and then as an assistant coach for graduates. In 2004, he was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame.
Outside of football, Eberflus is married to his wife Kelly, and they have two children together
