«I did not have a relationship with a 17-year-old. It is completely false», - Gates said at the time. «The accusation is that I traveled with some 17-year-old in some relationship. That is false, and records will prove that it is false. Providing flights and hotel rooms for people you are dating who have reached the age of majority is not a crime… People were talking about a minor and that there were photos of me with child prostitutes. That is obviously false. There will be no such photos because nothing like that ever happened».
By 2023, the investigation had concluded. Gates was not charged.
Gates studied at the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended William & Mary Law School and earned a Juris Doctor degree. In 2008, he was admitted to the Florida Bar.
Trump announced his selection for Attorney General on November 13, 2024, through Truth Social, nominating Gates.
«It is a great honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gates of Florida has been appointed Attorney General of the United States», - Trump wrote, calling Gates «deeply gifted and tenacious advocate».
The President-elect clarified that «little in America is more important than ending partisan warfare in our justice system», - asserting that as his potential Attorney General, Gates «will end the government’s weaponization, secure our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore the severely undermined trust and confidence of Americans in justice». Trump added that Gates «played a key role in debunking the hoax about Russia, Russia, Russia and in uncovering troubling and systemic corruption and government weaponization» during his time on the House Judiciary Committee.
Trump concluded his official appointment by describing Gates as a «defender of the Constitution and the rule of law». He added that Gates «will root out systemic corruption in the Department of Justice and return the department to its true mission of fighting crime and protecting our democracy and Constitution».
