Matt Gates has dropped out of the race for Attorney General, but he left his position in the House of Representatives when Donald Trump nominated him for the position of Attorney General. Now that he is no longer part of Trump’s cabinet or government, can Gates return to Congress?

Below, we break down everything we know at the moment about Gates' future in politics.

In a statement released on November 21, 2024, Gates noted that he had «great meetings» with members of the U.S. Senate, and they gave him «pause for thought».

«While the momentum was strong, it became clear that my appointment [to the position of Attorney General] was unfairly becoming a distraction from the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition», - the former congressman wrote. «There is no time to waste on meaningless mutual accusations in Washington, so I will withdraw my name from consideration for the position of Attorney General».

Gates added that he remains «fully committed to ensuring that Donald J. Trump becomes the most successful president in history» and that he «will forever be honored that President Trump nominated [him] to lead the Department of Justice».

The politician declined to be considered for the position of Attorney General after his past human trafficking investigation came to light. Although he was never charged with a crime, other allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, including a CNN report claiming he showed nude photos of women to House members.

During a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, Gates vehemently denied allegations that he had sex with a teenager.

«I did not have a relationship with a 17-year-old. That is absolutely false», - he insisted. «The accusation is that I traveled with some 17-year-old in some relationship. That is false, and records will confirm that it is false. Providing flights and hotel rooms for people you are dating who have reached the age of consent is not a crime».

The Department of Justice concluded its investigation into Gates. However, the House Ethics Committee reopened its investigation. In November 2024, the committee agreed to conclude its investigation and vote in December on whether to release its findings.

After Trump nominated him for the position of Attorney General, Gates left Congress in November 2024.

According to Newsweek, it is possible that Gates may return to Congress. However, it will not be easy to return to the House of Representatives. If Marco Rubio officially becomes the new Secretary of State, a vacancy will open up in the Senate that Gates could fill. According to the publication, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis may appoint Gates.

Currently, Gates is unemployed and is not a member of the U.S. Congress
