Matt Cameron is leaving Pearl Jam as the band’s drummer after nearly 30 years of playing together. The 62-year-old musician has been recognized for writing many songs for the band, including «Save You», - «The Fixer», - and «You Are», - and has been described by band members — currently Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder — as a key figure in their success. Naturally, fans are curious as to why Matt is leaving the rock band, considering his positive experience with them.
Neither Matt nor Pearl Jam have cited a specific reason for his departure, but it does not seem that he left the group due to bad relationships. In their own statement, Pearl Jam members called Matt «one of our first musical heroes in Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden» and «the one and only musician and drummer».
«He has propelled the last 27 years of live performances and studio recordings of Pearl Jam», - the band continued in their statement from July 7, 2025, according to the band’s Instagram page. «It has been a deeply important chapter for our group, and we always wish him the best. He will be deeply missed and will forever remain our friend in art and music».
Fans pointed out on social media that the touring schedule may become more challenging for Cameron, who is a father of two children with his wife, April Acevez.
Pearl Jam has not officially announced a new drummer to take Matt’s place. However, their former drummer — actually the first in the group — Dave Krusen commented on Matt’s Instagram post, writing: «Big brother, thank you for sharing your place with me, can’t wait to hear what you do next», - and fans asked Dave if he would take Matt’s place.
Matt hinted to fans that there will be «more to come» after his departure from Pearl Jam. In his Instagram announcement, Matt also thanked his Pearl Jam colleagues.
