Matthew Dowd, a long-time political strategist and commentator, was fired from MSNBC in September 2025 after making controversial statements about Charlie Kirk following his fatal shooting. MSNBC President Rebecca Cutler called the comments «unacceptable, insensitive, and intolerable».

«During our live broadcast about the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were unacceptable, insensitive, and intolerable», - Cutler’s statement read. «We apologize for his remarks, as does he. There is no place for violence, political or otherwise, in America».

Learn more about him and what he said below.

Dowd is a political consultant and commentator who has worked as a strategist and analyst for many years. He was the chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign, and later worked as a political commentator on ABC News. He joined MSNBC in 2022.

On air, Dowd described Kirk as «one of the most divisive, particularly divisive young figures… who constantly incites this kind of hateful speech… directed against certain groups».

He added: «And I always come back to the thought that hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that’s the environment we’re in. You can’t dwell on these awful thoughts you have, and then speak these awful words, without expecting awful actions to follow. And that’s the unpleasant environment we find ourselves in».

Dowd was fired from MSNBC after his on-air comments following Kirk’s shooting on September 10, 2025.

At this time, the individual who shot Kirk has not been identified.

The shooting took place during an event at the University of Utah Valley. Two individuals were briefly detained after the incident, but were released and no one was charged. The investigation is ongoing
