Michael J. Fox will always be a hero of Coldplay. Performing at the Glastonbury festival over the weekend, the band brought out the 63-year-old movie star for a surprise performance. Michael played guitar alongside the band as they performed the song «Fix You» and a brief version of «Johnny B. Goode» from his iconic scene in the movie «Back to the Future».
Vocalist Chris Martin paid tribute to Michael — who has been battling Parkinson’s disease since the 1990s — after welcoming the actor on stage. The 47-year-old singer of «Orphans» acknowledged the actor’s career in «Family Ties» and hinted at his iconic role in the movie, saying: «With his Chuck Berry riff and the way he hit Biff».
«The main reason we’re in the band is watching 'Back to the Future'», Chris revealed. «Thank you to our hero forever and one of the most amazing people on Earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you so much, Michael, our hero».
After the touching performance, Michael expressed his gratitude to Coldplay on Instagram.
«Glastonbury, all the love and thanks to the @coldplay team, who took such good care of us», he captioned the post on Sunday, June 30. «And a huge thank you to Chris, Will, Johnny, Guy, and Phil. Oh yeah, if you were wondering… it was incredible. There’s a time for every band and a band for every time. Now is the time for @coldplay».
Michael had previously performed with the band in 2016 at MetLife Stadium, where they performed «Johnny B. Goode» together.
The «War of the Roses» actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 when he was just 29 years old. According to the Mayo Clinic, the progressive disease affects the nervous system, and symptoms begin to manifest slowly in the patient. Eventually, the person suffering from the disease develops tremors and slowed speech. Currently, there is no cure for it.
Despite the challenging disease, Michael has been open about it throughout his acting career. In 2023, he released the documentary film «Still» on Apple TV+, in which he shared how he discovered his condition, what he did about it, and how his wife, Tracy Pollan, supported him. The couple met on the set of «Family Ties» and fell in love off-screen. They got married in 1988
