Mike Johnson, the 56th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, could have lost his position in Congress. As the House voted on Friday, January 3, 2025, Americans were curious about how he would retain his position as Speaker and what it would take for him to lose his seat.

Just as the House began voting for Speaker on Friday, January 3, 2025, Johnson released a statement through X, promising to «lead the House Republicans in reducing the size and scope of the federal government, holding bureaucracy accountable, and transitioning the United States to a more sustainable financial trajectory». He then listed what he plans to do if he remains Speaker, including «creating a working group of independent experts — not corrupt lobbyists and special interests — to work with DOGE and our committees on implementing recommended government and expenditure reforms to protect American taxpayers; tasking this working group with reviewing existing audits of federal agencies and organizations created by Congress — and presenting a report to my office for public release;» and «asking House committees to conduct aggressive reviews of authorizations and appropriations».

A person needs 218 out of 434 votes in the House to win the speakership — assuming all 434 legislators show up to cast their votes. Currently, Republicans have a majority in the House, but only by a slim margin. Johnson could not afford to lose a single vote.

At the time of publication, Johnson is still the Speaker of the House. Initially, it seemed he might not secure his position as Speaker after The Hill reported that he had a narrow margin of error. At 1:30 PM Eastern Time, Johnson did not have the votes to retain his position as Speaker, with 216 votes against 215 for Hakim Jeffries. Additionally, Thomas Massie voted for Tom Emmer, Ralph Norman voted for Jim Jordan, and Keith Self voted for Byron Donalds.

However, CNN reported that Johnson managed to remain Speaker after Self and Norman switched their votes to support Johnson.

There are a total of 435 seats in the House of Representatives. After the 2024 elections, Republicans won a majority in the House with 219 seats, while Democrats had 215 seats in the House
