The youngest son of the late Republican senator John McCain, whose military service was insulted by Donald Trump, announced that he is now registered as a Democrat and plans to vote for vice president Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election.
First Lieutenant Jimmy McCain announced his decision in an exclusive interview with CNN, published on Tuesday, September 3, during which he also criticized the former president and his campaign staff for their alleged behavior at Arlington National Cemetery last week, which he called a «disgrace».
«Show respect and leave. There is no need to film this», - McCain, an intelligence officer in the 158th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard, told CNN’s Jake Tapper.
He added: «The meaning of Arlington Cemetery is to come and show respect to the men and women who gave their lives for this country. When you turn it into politics, you disrespect the people who are there».
According to NPR, on Monday, August 26, a cemetery employee was reprimanded for not allowing Trump’s team to film and take photos in a restricted area on the grounds, known as Section 60, where «service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom» are buried, according to the cemetery’s website.
The Trump campaign claimed to have received permission from the families of the deceased service members to film, but McCain objected: «These men and women lying there in the ground have no choice».
«I just think for those who have spent a lot of time in uniform, they intuitively understand that it’s not about you there», - he said. «It's about the people who gave their lives for their country».
Trump’s reputation with the military began during his first presidential campaign in 2016 when he stated that former Republican presidential candidate and Arizona senator, who died in 2018, did not deserve hero status because he was captured during the Vietnam War. Since then, it has been reported that he called American soldiers buried at the World War I military cemetery in France «losers» and «suckers» and questioned the value of the Congressional Medal of Honor, usually awarded for acts of military heroism.
McCain, who was previously independent, said: «To hear things like [from Trump], that he was a loser because he was captured — I don’t think I can forgive that».
«I believe that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz embody a group of people who will help make this country better, who will lead us forward. Ultimately, that’s what really matters», - he said
