A woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of a fast-food worker, which occurred in 2024 due to a dispute over a drive-thru order. Monica Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Anitra West, who was shot on July 8, 2024, outside Church’s Texas Chicken in Memphis, according to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.
Following her guilty plea, Williams received her 30-year sentence, as reported by the district attorney’s office in a press release on September 21. In addition to second-degree murder, she also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, having a prior conviction.
According to prosecutors, Williams and West exchanged words regarding the drive-thru order while West was working. Williams left without paying or picking up her order but later returned and shot West as she stepped outside for fresh air. West, who was 48 years old, died at the hospital.
West’s friend, who was on the phone with her at the time of the shooting, told police she heard the customer yelling, «I'm going to kill you!» over the phone. West’s colleague called 911 that evening to report the shooting. Memphis police confirmed that a conflict had occurred between Williams and West over the order, and that the women did not know each other prior to the incident.
Williams was charged by Shelby County Assistant District Attorney Monica Timmerman. Information about her legal representation is currently unavailable. After West’s death, her father, Bruce Stevens, noted that «Anitra had a personality that could fill up a room». Stevens and her mother, Antonetta Stevens, shared that West was one of six children in the family and that she was killed after the family had recently returned from a trip that West missed due to work.
