The series «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» sparked controversy after its release. Based on the real story of the Menendez brothers and their crimes, the Netflix series dramatizes some events related to the real brothers. Cooper Koch played the role of Erik Menendez, and although the actor experienced some emotional and difficult moments in the show, the scene in the prison shower made everyone wonder if he was wearing a prosthetic when he was completely naked.
Find out what Cooper said about this scene.
According to the official logline, «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» «explores the lives of the Menendez brothers, sentenced for the brutal murders of their parents in 1989 in Beverly Hills». Nicholas Alexander Chavez plays the role of Lyle Menendez alongside Erik Cooper, while Javier Bardem plays Jose Menendez and Chloe Sevigny plays Kitty Menendez.
The viral scene shows Cooper standing in the prison shower completely naked and looking at another inmate. Throughout the series, the characters engage in sexual activity behind bars. However, nothing like this was ever confirmed by the real Erik.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Cooper pointed out that he was indeed fully naked in front of the camera during the shower scene.
«It was not a prosthetic», - he said with a smile, before host Andy Cohen replied, «That was my next question! Congratulations, Cooper. You are very blessed, aren’t you?»
In a statement released from prison — which was shared by his wife, Tammi Menendez — Erik condemned the series created by Ryan Murphy. He called it a «wicked portrayal» of their lives. Additionally, Erik pointed out that the portrayal of Lyle as an aggressive person was a «blatant lie».
Cooper visited Erik and Lyle at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and told Vanity Fair about his conversation with Erik.
«The first thing he said was, 'I've only heard good things about you and the fifth episode, and that you’ll get an Emmy. And I hope you do,'» Cooper told Vanity Fair on October 10. «He was very, very sweet about it, and said he might watch it someday. He needs time… I understand how he feels. The worst part of his life is being shown to millions of people, not to mention that it’s dramatized, fictional, Hollywood television. I understand how he feels, and I stand by him».
