This year California experienced a difficult autumn. After a series of small earthquakes in Southern California in September and October 2024, a major earthquake occurred off the coast of Northern California on December 5th. The magnitude of the quake was so high that a tsunami warning was issued for residents around San Francisco, Sacramento, and parts of Oregon.
The earthquake occurred off the coast of Humboldt County, California, which is near Redding and above two major cities: San Francisco and Sacramento. Initially, the earthquake magnitude was estimated at 6.6, but was later upgraded to 7.0, according to USGS data.
Several aftershocks were felt in the region, including a 5.8 magnitude quake in Lake County.
Most residents along the coast of Northern California felt the quake.
Today, no tsunami occurred on the California coast. However, a warning was issued for residents in the northern part of the state.
Residents of Northern California and Southern Oregon were warned of a tsunami after the major earthquake. Governor Gavin Newsom was informed of the incident, and the California Emergency Management Agency tweeted: «Tsunami warning now in effect and includes coastal areas of California and Oregon from Davenport, California (10 miles northwest of Santa Cruz) to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon (10 miles southwest of Florence). — Event details: Preliminary…»
