Powerful earthquake in Malibu: Los Angeles residents in panic

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, an earthquake centered in Malibu, California, shook a large part of Los Angeles County. Residents were awakened by the shaking at around 7:30 am local time. Many immediately wondered about the magnitude of the quake. Although not a first for Los Angeles, earthquakes in this area have caused widespread panic among locals for many years.
According to the US Geological Survey, the event on September 12 was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake. NBC Los Angeles reported that the initial magnitude was measured at 5.1 but was later downgraded to 4.7. No infrastructure damage or serious injuries were reported at the time of publication.
The California Geological Survey’s Twitter account confirmed the earthquake, stating: «A 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Malibu. Moderate shaking was felt at the epicenter and in western Los Angeles. Aftershocks can be expected».
According to KTLA, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that some boulders and rocks rolled onto Malibu Canyon Road near the Piuma Road tunnel, which was the epicenter. Officials began clearing the rocks from the scene in the morning.
In the epicenter, Malibu, an aftershock measuring 2.8 was reported. The aftershock occurred two minutes after the initial earthquake.
Officials are warning residents of Malibu, Hermosa Beach, Anaheim, Santa Monica, and other areas that aftershocks are possible and may be felt throughout the day.
As before, many social media users turned to X (formerly known as Twitter) to indicate that residents had indeed experienced a morning earthquake. Depending on where they were, social media was divided on the intensity of the earthquake; some described it as «scary» — considering they were awakened by the shaking — while others joked about how accustomed Los Angeles residents are to earthquakes and aftershocks
