Thunderbolts will make their grand debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025. In Marvel comics, the Thunderbolts are a group of anti-heroes/reformed villains who work for the government. Marvel confirmed at Comic-Con in San Diego in 2022 that a Thunderbolts movie is officially in the works. The upcoming film features a star-studded cast and will be part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the latest trailer gave fans a solid sneak peek!

Production was halted due to Hollywood strikes in 2023, so the release date was pushed back several times. As production changed so drastically, some actors had to drop out of the film. Hollywood Life has all the details on the Thunderbolts below. Keep reading to find out more about the new cast members, release date, and much more!

The «Thunderbolts» movie will be released on May 2, 2025. Marvel moved the release date by a year due to scheduling conflicts caused by SAG-AFTRA and writers' strikes.

Originally, the film was expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. The original release date was announced at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2022. The film was supposed to start filming in June 2023, but the production team was told to wait until the end of the strike, according to Deadline.

The film will be the penultimate film released in Phase Five, before «Blade» starring Mahershala Ali. Phase 5 MCU films released before «Thunderbolts» include «Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania», - «Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3», - «The Marvels», - and «Captain America: New World Order». Marvel has also launched a whole host of Phase 5 TV shows on Disney+, including «Secret Invasion», - a second season of «Loki», - and «Echo». «Ironheart», - «Agatha: House of Harkness», - and «Daredevil: Rebirth» are on the horizon.

The original cast of «Thunderbolts» was introduced at Disney’s D23 Expo in September 2022. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige brought the cast on stage to introduce them to the audience. Here is the entire cast.

Ayo Edebiri was originally set to star in «Thunderbolts», - but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. «Blockers» star Geraldine Viswanathan replaces the «Ted» star in «Thunderbolts». Marvel remains silent on who Ayo (and now Geraldine) will play in the film.

Ayo’s departure came after Steven Yeun had to drop out of an undisclosed role in «Thunderbolts». «For me, the past and changes somehow took me out of it», - Steven said in an interview with Variety. «But, I know Jake [Schreier] will do an incredible job». He added, «I want to be in a Marvel movie».

Lewis Pullman replaced Steven in «Thunderbolts». Lewis recently received critical acclaim for his role in «Chemical Hearts» with Brie Larson. The actor, son of Bill Pullman, also played Bob in «Top Gun: Maverick».

Jake Schreier will direct «Thunderbolts», - marking his first MCU project. His most famous film is the 2015 «Paper Towns». Eric Pearson is writing the screenplay, as he did previously for «Thor: Ragnarok» and «Black Widow».

When Marvel introduced «Thunderbolts», - they also revealed a brief plot description. It says, «A group of anti-heroes go on missions for the government». This aligns with the Thunderbolts' story in Marvel comics. Helmut Zemo forms the Thunderbolts in the comics, but it seems Daniel Brühl is not returning as Zemo in the film, so it’s clear that the MCU is going in a different direction.

David Harbour gave some hints about «Thunderbolts» in an interview on the «Phase Zero» podcast. «We're like screw-ups, which I like. And I think it’s funny to watch us all mess up», - the actor said. «I think it’s a spectrum. I think it’s very funny, but there’s also a lot of pathos in it».

David continued: «There's a lot of drama in that a group of people are always messing up — because of their character flaws, they’re always messing something up. And no one helps them with that»
