McKayla Skinner seemed to extend an olive branch to the US women’s gymnastics team after their victory in the all-around competition on Tuesday, July 30. McKayla, 27, had previously criticized the team, commenting on their «work ethic», but after the team’s victory under the leadership of Simone Biles, she posted a message expressing support for the team.
McKayla posted a photo of the team, including Simone, Jade Carey, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Grace McCallum. In the picture, all five women were wearing their gold medals and blue leotards, with their hands over their hearts. McKayla simply added three heart emojis to the photo, without further comment.
McKayla, who won a silver medal in 2021, faced criticism after she expressed her opinion about four members of the US team in a now-deleted YouTube video. «Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and depth just isn’t there like it used to be. Just notice that, I mean, obviously, a lot of the girls aren’t working as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic», - she said, as reported by Page Six.
After facing backlash, McKayla posted an apology to Simone’s four teammates. «My intention was not to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or diminish their work ethic», - she said. «Your hard work and dedication paid off, and I congratulate each of you».
After the US team’s victory, Simone seemed to hint at McKayla in her post, acknowledging the team’s win. «Lack of talent, laziness, Olympic champions», - she wrote in the caption. In the comments section, former gymnast McKayla Maroney supported Simone, alluding to the silver medalist. «She tried and found out [the truth]», - she wrote, referencing Page Six. «I feel like I need to apologize to get my name back»
