Tax season has arrived, and everyone will be rushing to file their tax returns. As taxpayers gather all their W-2, 1099, and other documentation to file for tax refunds, many are wondering when exactly the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will begin accepting returns.

According to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, they have enhanced tools for filing tax returns for Americans. According to the IRS website, Werfel stated that this is a «historic period of improvements for the IRS, and people will see additional tools and features to help them file their tax returns this tax season».

«These taxpayer-focused improvements we have already made are important, but this is just the beginning of what the IRS should do», - added the commissioner. «More can be done with continued investments in the national tax system».

Everything you need to know about this tax season is outlined below.

January 27, 2025 is the first day when the IRS will accept tax returns from taxpayers, according to the federal agency. The IRS noted that it expects «more than 140 million individual tax returns for the 2024 tax year» to be filed by the 2025 deadline, which falls in the spring. Additionally, the IRS estimates that more than half of all returns will be filed with the help of a tax professional.

«The 2025 tax season reflects the ongoing progress of the IRS in modernizing and adding new tools and features to assist taxpayers», - the website states. «Since the last tax season, improvements include greater access to tax account information through text and voice virtual assistants, expanded features on the individual online IRS account, greater access to dozens of tax forms via smartphones and tablets, and enhanced fraud and scam alerts threatening taxpayers».

April 15, 2025 is the federal deadline for taxpayers to file their returns this year.

Taxpayers use various tools to file taxes, including TurboTax or H&R Block; others may hire a personal accountant to handle their taxes.

The IRS also provides taxpayers with the «Direct Filing» tool for filing federal returns. However, Direct Filing is only available in 25 states
