Brigitte Bardot left behind a controversial legacy. Although she was regarded as a significant icon of French pop culture and an animal rights activist, the late 91-year-old actress was also known for her outspoken political and social views. Following the announcement of her death in December 2025, many recalled her complicated relationship with her son, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, as well as her statements against Muslims, the LGBTQ+ community, and the #MeToo movement.

Additionally, Bardot’s marriage to her fourth husband, Bernard d’Ormale, sparked public controversy, as he was a former advisor to politician Jean-Marie Le Pen, who had previously been repeatedly condemned for inciting racial hatred.

Below, Hollywood Life examines Bardot’s most controversial statements and scandals from her past.

In her 1999 book «Le Carre de Pluton», - Bardot wrote about immigrants coming to France. In one excerpt, she criticized: «My land is once again overrun by foreigners, especially Muslims», - which led to a French court fining the actress 30,000 francs in 2000, according to several sources.

Furthermore, Bardot condemned the ritual slaughter of sheep during the Muslim holiday known as Eid al-Adha.

Bardot was repeatedly fined in France for her remarks about Muslims.

In 2018, Bardot caused bewilderment worldwide when she called the #MeToo movement «hypocritical, absurd, and uninteresting» in an interview with Paris Match.

«Many actresses flirt with producers to get a role. And then, when they talk about it, they say they became victims of harassment», - the late actress stated, as reported by The Guardian. She added, «In reality, it doesn’t benefit them; it only harms them… Most of them are hypocritical and absurd».

Pointing out that she had never been a victim of sexual harassment herself, Bardot noted that she enjoyed the attention from men.

«I liked hearing that I was beautiful or that I had a nice backside», - she said. «Such compliments are pleasant».

In her 2003 book «Un Cris dans le Silence», - Bardot described the LGBTQ+ community as «freaks from a fairground» and accused them of «destroying» France, according to People.

Bardot quickly faced criticism for her remarks and responded by insisting that she had gay friends. In a letter to Tribumove, according to The Advocate, Bardot wrote: «Besides my husband—who might also become one someday—I am completely surrounded by gay men. For many years, they have been my support, my friends, my adopted children, my confidants»
