Natalia Grace was adopted by Michael and Kristine Barnett at the age of six in 2010, and in May she became the main character when her story was told in a documentary series on Investigation Discovery called «The Mysterious Case of Natalia Grace». The series showed how Michael and Kristine accused their adopted daughter, who had a rare genetic condition called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, of attempting to kill them after the adoption. They also claimed that she was not a child, but instead an adult sociopath with hidden motives.

Natalia gave her perspective on what happened after she was adopted by Michael and Kristine in 2010.

In the series released in 2023, Natalia claims that she never tried to harm her adoptive parents or other family members after the adoption. «I was never in your room with a knife», - she said in the trailer, to which Michael replied, «I know what I saw».

Natalia was accused of attempting to kill her adoptive parents, Michael and Kristine, who ultimately divorced in 2018. Two years after Natalia’s adoption, the couple went to court with a petition to change her birth year from 2003 to 1989, making her 20 years old at the time of adoption. They then moved with their three sons to Canada, leaving Natalia to live alone in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana the following year.

The documentary series explores «the adoption saga and the Barnetts' accusations from Natalia’s point of view, offering a look at what really happened behind closed doors in the Barnett home». It will also present «previously unseen evidence and footage, as well as new theories and testimonies from various voices, including former FBI agents who initially investigated Natalia’s case, and genetic experts who helped determine Natalia’s true age».

Natalia confronted her former adoptive parents in the ID documentary series. She provided insight into her next chapter and shared her life perspective with other adoptees. Bishop Anton and Christina Manns, former adoptive parents of Natalia, sat down for an exclusive interview in the documentary series «The Mysterious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks». Although she was adopted by this couple, it later became known that they heavily controlled her life. Ultimately, she escaped and as of 2025, now lives with the DePole family.

Six years after Natalia left, both Michael and Kristine were charged in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, with crimes against a dependent, causing bodily injury, causing serious bodily injury to a dependent, endangering the life of a dependent, neglecting or cruelly confining a dependent, and conspiracy against a dependent in connection with their move. They claimed their innocence. In 2022, Michael was acquitted of his charges, and prosecutors dropped their case against his ex-wife in March 2023
