At the concert on September 22, Niall Horan paid tribute to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, who passed away in October 2024. During the opening of his Dinner Party Live tour in Birmingham, Horan played a recording of an interview with Payne, in which he spoke about his life achievements.
The recording began immediately after Horan performed the song «End of an Era». In it, Payne noted, «I always try to remind myself where I came from and how far I’ve come in life. It’s really amazing».
Liam Payne died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires; he was 31 years old. The day after his death, Horan and the other members of One Direction released a joint statement expressing their condolences and stating that they would remember Payne as a dear friend and brother.
Horan also shared that he had seen Payne just two weeks before his death. In his Instagram, he wrote, «I am absolutely devastated by the loss of my amazing friend, Liam. It just doesn’t seem real».
The song «End of an Era» was released in honor of Payne and contains lines about the fleeting nature of time and memories of shared moments. Horan noted that the work on this song began many years ago, and he hopes it will be meaningful to listeners as much as it is to him.
