The Watch With Us team has presented a list of five nearly perfect TV shows about World War II that are worth watching. These series, according to the authors, offer deeper and more engaging stories than many films.
First on the list is «Band of Brothers» (2001), created by HBO and based on the book by Stephen E. Ambrose. The miniseries tells the story of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, known as «Easy Company». The plot covers their journey from training to D-Day, including significant moments of the war. The main cast includes Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Michael Fassbender, and others. The series is available on HBO Max.
Next is «The Pacific» (2010), also created with the involvement of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of the fight against the Japanese army from the perspective of Marines Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone, starting with the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The series is also available on HBO Max.
«Light in the Darkness» (2023) focuses on the story of Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary, who risks everything to hide his family from the Nazis. The main roles are played by Bel Powley and Liev Schreiber. The series can be watched on Prime Video.
«Manhattan» (2014−2015) tells the story of the U.S. race to create the atomic bomb, focusing on scientists Frank Winter and Charlie Isaacs, as well as their families. The series is available on Prime Video.
Finally, «World on Fire» (2019−2023) covers the pre-war events and the beginning of the conflict, although it concluded after two seasons. The main cast includes Sean Bean and Helen Hunt. The series can be watched on PBS.
