The series «The Boroughs» had all the chances to become a hit on Netflix: a supernatural mystery, a star-studded cast, and support from «Stranger Things» creators Matt and Ross Duffer. However, despite the initial buzz surrounding the project, Netflix decided not to renew it for a second season, Deadline reports.
Created by Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews, and produced by the Duffers, «The Boroughs» tells the story of a group of residents in a retirement community in New Mexico who discover a mysterious supernatural force lurking beneath their seemingly peaceful neighborhood.
The sci-fi series starred Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters, and Denis O’Hare. While the show was often compared to «Stranger Things», - it focused on more adult characters grappling with themes of aging, grief, friendship, and mortality, battling an otherworldly threat tied to time itself.
Netflix officially canceled «The Boroughs» in June 2026, less than a month after the show’s premiere.
This decision was particularly disappointing for fans, as the creative team envisioned the series as a multi-season story. In an interview with IGN in May 2026, Addis stated that the team had developed a plan for three seasons. «We have a very specific plan for three seasons, and we think we know the last shot of the last scene of the last episode», - Addis said. He added that while the first season was designed to feel complete, the creators intentionally left some mysteries unresolved in hopes of exploring them in future seasons.
Netflix did not publicly explain why it canceled «The Boroughs». However, several reports point to a combination of declining viewership and relatively high production costs for the show.
The series debuted with strong numbers and made it into Netflix’s Top 10, but reportedly, viewership dropped significantly in the second week. Industry publications also noted that the show’s visual effects, large ensemble cast, and ambitious sci-fi plot likely made it expensive to produce.
