Ashley Madison is a dating site launched in 2002. The platform is aimed at married couples and encourages infidelity. According to their slogan: «Life is short. Have an affair».
In 2015, the site was hacked, and countless emails, messages, and other data from Ashley Madison clients were exposed. However, four years later, the site reported an increase in users: 60 million.
Speaking to Business Insider, Chief Strategy Officer Paul Keable noted that the high numbers of their site prove that «monogamy is not in our DNA».
«[It's] a community that we are very proud of», - he added. «Currently, more than 20,000 members are joining every day, showing a huge demand for online sites for married people like ours. People have realized that marriage may not be as fairy-tale as promised, but divorce doesn’t always seem reasonable either. It’s expensive, but more importantly, it doesn’t solve their problem».
The three-part Netflix documentary series tells «the story of the worst intimate data leak on the internet in modern times and what happened when people’s darkest desires, shameful betrayals, and sexual secrets were exposed to the world», - according to the logline.
«When Ashley Madison, a dating site for people seeking affairs, was hacked, millions of users became victims of their intimate data leak, destroying marriages and lives», - the synopsis states, according to Netflix. «This three-episode documentary series from Minnow Films and director Toby Paton explores the creation of the site during the dot-com boom, people who used the site to explore a part of their love life they felt was lost, and the hack that destroyed it all».
Among the most famous names mentioned in the documentary is Josh Duggar. After Ashley Madison data was exposed, it was revealed that Duggar had two accounts. He then admitted to cheating on his wife, Anna Duggar. They are still married, as he serves time in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.
Snooki’s husband, Jionni LaValle, was mentioned in the documentary, but the couple denied that he ever registered on the site. Additionally, Christian YouTube vlogger Sam Rader appeared in the documentary with his wife, Nia Rader. He admitted to having an account, but Nia gave him a «second chance», - and they are still together
