Netflix will release a new mini-series «Apple Cider» about the story of Australian influencer Belle Gibson

Netflix mini-series «Apple Cider» is a «story based on a lie», - following Australian influencer Belle Gibson.
In the early 2010s, she deceived her social media followers by faking brain cancer and falsely claiming to have been cured by a special diet — which she coincidentally sold. Gibson continued to build a fitness and diet empire through her Instagram account @healing_belle, launching an app and a book, both titled «Whole Kitchen».
In 2013, Gibson posted on Instagram: «I have been healing a heavy and malignant brain cancer for the past few years with natural medicine, Gerson therapy, and diet».
However, in 2015, journalists Bo Donnelly and Nick Toscano exposed her lies, eventually publishing a non-fiction book about the scandal in 2017 titled «The Woman Who Fooled the World: The True Story of Fake Health Guru Belle Gibson». They were the first to reveal Gibson’s financial lies about donating profits from her business to several charities. It soon became known that she had also lied about her age and completely fabricated her cancer diagnosis — well, her multiple cancer diagnoses, to be precise.

It seems that Gibson, now 33, is still somewhere in Australia, keeping a low profile. In 2017, Gibson was fined over $ 400,000, according to PEOPLE.
In 2024, the media outlet A Current Affair spotted Gibson at a gas station, apparently somewhere in Australia. The media reported that she still had not paid her $ 400,000 fine.
Gibson is not married, but there were rumors of a relationship with Clive Rothwell, mentioned in the show. While many real people in the show had altered names, Rothwell’s name remained the same.
It is unclear whether they are still in a relationship or if they have broken up, but at a court hearing in 2019, Gibson referred to Rothwell as her neighbor and friend, according to The Guardian.
In the show, Gibson is in a long-term relationship with Rothwell, and she has a young son from a previous marriage.
In real life, Gibson has a son, according to The Woman Who Fooled the World.
Gibson is portrayed by actress Kaitlyn Dever, but creator Samantha Strauss emphasizes that the version of Gibson in the mini-series is different from the real person. «The real Belle is different from the Belle (Kaitlyn Dever) we created in the show. I have never met Belle. We have never sat down and chatted. I was given the facts of her life, and I created a character from that».
Strauss also shared that she first learned about Gibson after watching her 2015 interview on 60 Minutes Australia, where journalist Tara Brown urged Gibson to «just be honest»
