Nicole Kidman talked about working with Kubrick and Cruise in «Eyes Wide Shut»

Nicole Kidman made a rare comment about her ex-husband, Tom Cruise. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times published last week, the 57-year-old actress was asked if she believed that director Stanley Kubrick «engineered» her marriage to Tom, 62, for the sake of their characters' relationship on screen.
«I suppose he engineered it», - Nicole told the publication. «There were ideas that interested him. He asked a lot of questions. But he had a clear understanding of the story he was telling».
The «Big Little Lies» star also recalled that Stanley would say, «Triangles are complicated. You have to be careful when it’s a triangle». Nicole also noted that the director «understood» how «one person could feel threatened» and «knew how to manage» that.
Responding to a question about a scene from «Eyes Wide Shut» that took several weeks to shoot, Nicole explained that in it, she and Tom «smoked a joint in bed and where [she laughs] and delivers a long monologue».
«It took many weeks», - Nicole said. «We rehearsed a lot in the bedroom, and then he didn’t like what we did. So we reworked, constructed as we went along. We didn’t need to rush. Stanley never went over budget. He bought time».
As for how this particular scene was created, Nicole noted that there were «many conversations» between her, Tom, and Stanley.
«When Tom and I first started working with Stanley, it was at his home, and we didn’t even move to the Pinewood Studios sets», - Nicole explained. «Six, eight weeks went by, and we were thinking, 'When are we finally going to start?' And we just didn’t start. We became comfortable with each other, comfortable enough to throw ideas around. For this scene, we improvised the beginning through rehearsals».
Tom and Nicole first met in 1989 while working on the film «Days of Thunder». They got married a year later. During their marriage, the couple adopted children Isabella and Connor Cruise. However, by 2001, Tom and Nicole had separated and officially divorced in August of that year
