Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley expressed her support for former President Donald Trump in his 2024 pre-election campaign on Tuesday, July 16. After Haley fought against Trump for the Republican nomination, she has now promised her support to the former president. In comments posted on social media, she explained her motives, but they contradicted statements she made against Trump during the pre-election campaign.
Haley explained that she believes Trump is a stronger choice than President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. «Let me start with one thing very clear. Donald Trump has my strong support», - she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). «Our country is at a critical moment. We have a choice. For over a year, I have said that a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for President Kamala Harris. After the debates, everyone knows that is true».
Haley continued and tried to reach out to voters who may not agree with Trump on every policy. She also called for unity within the Republican Party. «I have not always agreed with President Trump. But we agree much more than we disagree», - she said.
Of course, Haley’s comments came not long after she criticized Trump during her pre-election campaign. Earlier, she called the Republican candidate «unstable and unbalanced» at pre-election events. In February, she stated that Trump was «unqualified to hold the office of President of the United States».
Haley suspended her campaign for president in March. She was the last candidate remaining in the race, and her withdrawal made Trump the presumed Republican candidate. As she exited the race, she called on the former president to earn the votes of party members. «Now it’s up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those who didn’t support him in our party and beyond.
