Nikola Peltz Beckham is suing a mobile dog care service, claiming that the company is responsible for the death of her 8-year-old Chihuahua named Nala.
The «Lola» star, a 29-year-old actress, filed a complaint against groomer Joni Seballos, owner Deborah «Deb» Gittlman, and HoundSpa LLC in the Supreme Court of Westchester County, New York, on Tuesday, July 30.
The complaint from July 30 alleged that «upon information and belief, during the care of Nala, Seballos not only failed to properly care for her, but also cruelly mistreated and/or intentionally abused the dog, with complete indifference to her safety, health, and well-being».
The 2-pound Chihuahua, reportedly taken to the HoundSpa van for regular care in June, returned «in obvious serious physical distress with water-filled lungs, a pulsating chest, and hyperventilation». Nala was taken to a veterinarian and died within hours, the complaint stated.
«The veterinarian noted that Nala had a blue tongue, fluid in her lungs, and was suffering neurological damage», - the lawsuit continued. «Nala was hooked up to oxygen and cared for, while Nikola watched with heart-wrenching and emotional distress as her dog suffered».
After witnessing the death of her beloved pet, Nikola allegedly experienced «injury and emotional suffering».
«This case is about holding accountable those who abuse animals under their care and shedding light on the lack of protection for pet owners and their beloved dogs and pets», - added the lawsuit, accusing the dog care company of «reckless and malicious conduct» that led to her pet’s death.
The comment on «reckless and malicious conduct» came after it was revealed that the company kept Seballos on staff despite a «history of complaints» that he «repeatedly» mistreated and abused animals.
The actress said that her brother and his girlfriend had a negative experience with Seballos in 2022 after he cared for their dog, and the pet allegedly returned «stressed» with red and irritated eyes.
Since the incident, the actress of «The Last Airbender» says that HoundSpa has refused to provide answers about what happened to her dog.
«With this lawsuit, Nikola seeks to shed light on the exact cruel treatment and abuse that was done to her beloved dog in that van», - the statement read. «HoundSpa, its owner, and its groomer must be held accountable for their actions and pay for the life they ended».
Peltz Beckham, married to Brooklyn Beckham since 2022, is demanding compensation, which she says she will donate to dog rescue organizations. She also said she wants to draw attention to the issue of «unregulated, unlicensed, and cruel» groomers and advocate for legislation requiring mandatory cameras in grooming vans
