Nicholas Sparks honors actress Gina Rowlands after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis became known. In a recent Instagram post, the author expressed sincere admiration for the movie star, calling Alzheimer’s a «cruel disease» and sharing a photo of 94-year-old Gina from the set.
«Alzheimer's is such a cruel disease», - Nicholas captioned his post on Instagram on Wednesday, June 26. «On days like these, I remember Gina’s powerful performance as Allie and the depth she brought to the character. Her performance touched millions of hearts and helped bring my story to life in ways I never dreamed of».
Noting that he feels «honored to work with such a talented artist», - Nicholas expressed his «thoughts and prayers» for Gina and her family «during this difficult time».
«I will always cherish her legacy in film and her impact on 'The Notebook'», - Nicholas concluded his caption.
Gina played the older version of Rachel McAdams' character, Allie Hamilton, in the film. The film tells the story of how Allie eventually lost her memory and couldn’t remember her love story with husband Noah Calhoun. Ryan Gosling played the younger version of Noah, and James Garner played the older version.
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common forms of dementia in patients. According to the National Institute on Aging, scientists have not yet determined what causes this disease, but the number of diagnosed cases of Alzheimer’s doubles every five years after age 65.
«The Notebook» director Nick Cassavetes is Gina’s son, and he recently revealed his mother’s diagnosis during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
«I asked my mom to play the older Allie, and we talked a lot about Alzheimer’s and the desire to be authentic, and now, over the last five years, she has Alzheimer’s», - the director said in an interview published on Tuesday, June 25. «She has full-blown dementia. And it’s so strange — we lived it, she played it, and now it’s on us».
Despite the diagnosis, Gina has proven herself to be a hardworking and dedicated actress. With a career in film that spans decades, Gina was determined to deliver a heartbreaking performance on screen. Recalling one episode on set, Nick remembered how his mother «got mad» at him.
«We're going to reshoots, and now it’s one of those situations where mom got mad, and I asked her, 'Can you do it, mom?' She said, 'I can do anything,'» the director said, adding, «I swear on my father’s life, this is true: Tears just poured out of her eyes when she saw [James], and she cried»
