The huge popularity of the musical «Wicked» hardly changed anything in the voting at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards ceremony earlier this month. Despite four nominations, the blockbuster film only won one award for cinematographic achievements and box office revenue. Best actress in a musical or comedy film nominees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, best supporting actress nominee, went home empty-handed.
Then the Oscar nominations were finally announced on January 23, 2025, after two delays due to fires in the Palisades and surrounding areas of Los Angeles. The epic musical received ten Oscar nominations, second only to Emily Perez’s 13 nominations and tied with «Brutal».
Read on to find out in which categories «Wicked» received nominations.
In the film «Wicked», - Erivo stars as Elphaba and Grande as Glinda. Supporting actors include Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Jaret Winokur as Nessarose, and Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond.
«Wicked» came in second in terms of the number of nominations for the 2025 Oscars. Erivo is nominated for Best Actress, and Grande is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The film is also one of the ten nominees for Best Picture, and it received additional nominations for visual effects, editing, hairstyling and makeup, sound, original soundtrack, costumes, and production design.
Yes! As mentioned earlier, both Grande and Erivo were nominated for their roles in the film. Grande admitted she was shocked by the news in an Instagram post on January 23. «Lifting my head between sobs to say thank you so much @theacademy for this incredible recognition», - she captioned a photo of herself in a Dorothy costume from «The Wizard of Oz» as a child. «I can’t stop crying, no surprise to anyone».
She continued: «I am humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and to share this with little Ari, who sat and studied how Judy Garland sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow, right before the big, beautiful bubble came in. I am proud of you, baby. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for this recognition @theacademy».
Erivo also took to the same platform to express her gratitude on Thursday. «Moments like these don’t happen very often, and when they do, it’s sacrilege to let them pass by without a moment of gratitude», - she captioned a photo of herself as Elphaba. «I am grateful, grateful @theacademy, grateful to be part of something that makes people feel seen, grateful to be a cog in the wheel of something that makes us believe in magic, grateful to have experienced a dream come true and deeply grateful for this incredible recognition. I am often asked what I would say to my younger self. Well, today there is nothing to say. She is smiling, shining, beaming from ear to ear. That says a lot»
